Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Grant
The Central PA Humane Society (CPHS) received a $23,200 grant from PetSmart Charities to implement a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program for feral cats in the Altoona area. TNR is a humane and effective means of controlling animal overpopulation in which feral – unowned outdoor – cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped (the universal symbol of a neutered and vaccinated cat). The cats are then returned to their outdoor homes, to live happily without the risk of reproducing.
Over the next 24 months, CPHS will perform TNR on 480 feral cats from target areas in the City of Altoona. “We identified our target areas based on the neighborhoods where we receive the most cats, as well as complaint calls received,” said Mary Anslinger, Executive Director of CPHS. “We believe we can significantly impact homeless cat overpopulation by first focusing on the areas most in need. We truly appreciate the generosity of PetSmart Charities to allow us this opportunity to serve the animals and people of our community.”
“CPHS is dedicated to improving the lives of homeless cats in central Pennsylvania,” said Susana Della Maddalena, Vice President and Executive Director at PetSmart Charities, Inc. “By creating programs like this one, they are making strides toward ending homeless-pet overpopulation and improving life for people and pets alike.”
